On May 2, I met with representatives from the NC Highway Patrol, Union County Sheriff’s Department, NC DOT, and Fairview Volunteer Fire Department. The purpose of this meeting was to brainstorm ideas to make Highway 218 safer for the traveling public. Residents of Fairview have seen the increase in traffic and accidents over the past several years, as 218 has become a popular cut-through to avoid Highway 74 traffic. One area that is planned for 218 is “Saturation Enforcement” which became effective immediately. Thanks to the Union County Sheriff’s Department, NC State Highway Patrol, and other municipality police forces for the extra enforcement on Highway 218!
Other ideas were discussed as well. There will be a committee of law enforcement personnel set up to meet later this month in Albemarle. They will travel Highway 218 and make recommendations to the NC DOT.
